- Another problem is a good, linear 32-bit DAC isn't so easy to build.
- That said, you could use more than 16 bits so you could mix lots of 16 bit
- sound. Of course, with 32 bits you could probably mix an entire symphony
- with separate 16-bit audio for each instrument... On the other hand, you
- probably wouldn't have to ever worry about upgrading the sound subsystem
- ever again, except possibly to increase the sampling rate (which wouldn't
- affect existing software).
-
- One thing to keep in mind is the Amiga originally was a machine that
- was way ahead of it's time. It would be cool to attempt to recapture that
- tradition, though I'm not willing to spend an extra $1,000 for it... I would
- spend more $$$ to get a machine with upgraded sound capabilities, but the
- amount depends on how much better it is. I'd be happy with the capability
- for full CD quality sound, quadraphonic sound output, and a built-in audio
- digitizer that I could use for things like Internet phone, recording voice
- mail messages for my modem, and getting simple sound samples to use as my
- system beep. The trick is it needs to be standard across all new amigas so
- we'll have software support for it. The current sound boards available for
- the Amiga are cool, but aren't worth the price for those of us who are not
- using our Amigas for studio or other professional work, since there isn't
- much software that supports it.
